About Karat
Karat started by building corporate cards and banking accounts for creators, the people you follow on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Twitch who run real businesses but were treated as an edge case by most financial providers. The same products fit a much wider set of businesses, and today we serve creators alongside the agencies, studios and growing companies that run the same way.
We've raised $70 million from Signal Fire, Union Square Ventures, Y Combinator, CRV and Coatue, alongside CEOs from YouTube, Twitter and Wealthfront and Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin. Our team comes from Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, earlier startups and the creator world itself, and we're headquartered in Los Angeles.
The role
This role works our day-to-day risk review: deciding which businesses we onboard, catching fraud on cards and payments, and escalating what needs a second opinion. You'll report to our Head of Operations and work closely with our compliance, fraud and credit teams.
As we grow, part of the job is improving how the work gets done. If you bring more experience, the scope grows with it.
What you'll own
- Onboarding decisions: identity and entity verification, sanctions screening and enhanced due diligence
- Fraud review: card and payment fraud, account takeover and disputes, deciding what to approve, hold, freeze or escalate
- Ongoing monitoring: transaction review and AML alerts
- A clear, defensible written record behind every decision
- Evidence for partner bank audits and information requests
- Direct conversations with customers about documentation, holds and outcomes
- Rule improvements: spotting patterns across cases and proposing new or tuned rules, tested against real cases and false-positive rates
- Product feedback: flagging bugs and tooling gaps to product and engineering, and helping shape the fixes
- The workflows, templates and automation that take repeat work off the queue
What we're looking for
Ideally you have a year or more in fraud or risk operations at a fintech, payments company, card issuer or bank, with working knowledge of compliance. We're just as interested in someone newer to the field who learns fast and shows the instincts below.
- Hands-on fraud review, plus familiarity with KYC and KYB, sanctions screening and transaction monitoring
- Comfort with rules, thresholds and false-positive rates: you can tell when a rule is catching the wrong things
- Curiosity that turns into digging: when something doesn't add up, you keep pulling until you understand it, weigh what a customer tells you against what the account shows, and land somewhere you'll put your name on
- The judgment to decide on incomplete information, and to know when to escalate instead
- A habit of using AI to work more effectively, within the guardrails of a regulated program
Nice to have: SQL; experience with Sardine, Oscilar, Unit21, Socure, Alloy, Persona or Baselayer; chargebacks and disputes; investigating business customers, including beneficial ownership and funds flows; working directly with a sponsor bank.
